Meet

Salim Adofo

Salim Adofo is a tenant organizer and a community advocate. He was elected by his Congress Heights neighbors in 2018 to serve as a Commissioner on Advisory Neighborhood Commission 8C. In 2021, he was unanimously chosen by his peers to serve as chair of the commission.

As a tenant organizer, Salim has provided legal support and emergency rental assistance to over 800 families to enable them to remain in their homes because they have lost their income as a result of COVID-19. As a result of his efforts, new tenant associations have been formed as well as existing ones have been strengthened throughout Ward 8.

In response to the concerns of several residents and community groups regarding the quality of education in Ward 8, Salim established the Ward 8 STEM Academy. It has been successful in educating elementary and middle school students in the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and the arts. Additionally, the initiative provides Ward 8 youth with an opportunity to develop their critical thinking skills and learn about conflict resolution.

During his tenure as a Commissioner, Salim has worked to improve traffic safety and infrastructure in Ward 8. Through his efforts, speed bumps have been installed near each school in his Single Member District. The District Department of Transportation has been able to resurface a variety of roads, fix potholes, and install raised sidewalks as a result of his coordination with the department. As part of his environmental justice efforts, he also established the "Clean Ward 8" initiative. Through the initiative, he coordinates monthly community clean-up events at schools, parks, and recreation centers to ensure that Ward 8 students live in a clean and safe environment.

Salim is a graduate of the University of the District of Columbia and a member of the Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honor Society. He is also a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

As a member of the United States Army, Salim served honorably during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Over the past few years, he has served on the boards of the United Planning Organization, as well as the National Society of Black Engineers.
